There were 34 teams from 15 schools in the Varsity division and the tournament broke to quarterfinals after six preliminary debates. It took a 4-2 record with 218 high-low points to clear; two 4-2 teams broke and three did not. The first six seeds had 5-1 records and seeds 7-11 finished at 4-2.
